Before the Founding of Chrome Hearts
Before the founding of Chrome Hearts
Richard Stark, who founded Chrome Hearts, first encountered the leather import business while working in a company related to carpentry apprenticeships. He later shifted from carpentry to selling leather goods. Traveling across the United States on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, he met John Bowman, who was also involved in leather goods sales, and the two began working together in the leather fashion business. Beyond motorcycle leather fashion, they also sought to create wearable accessories, and with the addition of engraver Leonard Kamhout, the business was formally established in 1988. There are several stories about the origin of the name “Chrome Hearts,” including meanings such as “a heart that never rusts” or “a heart as strong as steel.” However, Richard himself once said, “It doesn’t have any special meaning. I chose it because it sounded cool.”
How Chrome Hearts Became Popular After Its Founding
The year after the brand was founded, in 1989, Chrome Hearts was involved in costume design for the film Chopper Chicks in Zombietown, directed by a friend of Richard Stark. At the time, due to budget constraints, the costumes mainly featured simple leather biker jackets. However, this exposure spread by word of mouth and became a turning point that helped the brand gain popularity among motorcycle riders. As the brand’s popularity grew, it began independently selling original buttons, zippers, and hardware. Its reputation soon expanded from bikers to rock musicians. In 1992, Chrome Hearts won the Best Accessories Designer Award from the CFDA, after which it quickly expanded beyond celebrities to reach the wider consumer market.

Chrome Hearts Today
Chrome Hearts today
Today, Chrome Hearts offers not only leather goods such as biker jackets and wallets, but also silver jewelry including pendants and bracelets, as well as hats, eyewear, furniture, lighters, and phone accessories. Even with its growing popularity, the brand remains committed to not producing anything until high-quality materials are secured. This strong philosophy and dedication to premium craftsmanship have further elevated the brand’s value, firmly establishing Chrome Hearts as the “king of silver jewelry.” Currently, Richard Stark’s eldest daughter, Jesse Jo Stark, serves as the chief designer. Having collaborated with sneaker brand VANS in her youth and performed in her own band, her design style blends subtle punk influences with indigenous-inspired and feminine elements. Because it is also loved by many celebrities in Japan, Chrome Hearts continues to enjoy immense popularity.

Karl Lagerfeld, who designed for brands such as Chanel and Fendi, was widely known as one of the world’s most famous Chrome Hearts enthusiasts. Many designers from contemporary fashion brands have also admired Chrome Hearts, including Phillip Lim. Thanks to its long-cultivated craftsmanship and high-level design, Chrome Hearts has achieved the rare feat of collaborating with major fashion labels despite originally being known as a silver jewelry brand. The brand has released collaborations with UGG and motorcycle boot maker WESCO, and its partnerships with Rick Owens and Gareth Pugh are also especially well known. Chrome Hearts has steadily continued to elevate its value, evolving from a streetwear icon into a true luxury fashion brand.
